The Maybe Queries

 RantWoman has a task.

RantWoman is seeking Light from others about whether to do the task as offered or to reiterate and reprise what the group chewed on last week.

Below is Plan B, such as it has come to RantWoman

Well known US bloviator (sorry, not sorry for the word choice) Francis Fukuyama wrote an article after the Soviet Union fell apart declaring "the end of history," which I interpreted as universal liberal democracy breaking out everywhere.

From Pope Leo Xiv
In our competitive society, where it seems that only the strong and winners deserve to live, sport also teaches us how to lose. It forces us, in learning the art of losing, to confront our fragility, our limitations and our imperfections. It is through the experience of these limits that we open our hearts to hope. Athletes who never make mistakes, who never lose, do not exist

In what respects do we see history rising up and kicking us in the rear all over the place?

In such an environment, where are voices of continuing revelation needed most?

Do Friends feel any call to reflect on:

the military parade, the 250th anniversary of the army, the President's birthday and the #NoKings Protests OR about the celebration of Pope Leo Xiv in Chicago? Should we add various very hot but not yet nuclear wars, ICE raids, the depradations of a senile President and his, cough, team...?

Saturday Worship Sharing

Saturday:

316 - Building Bridges

Building bridges between our divisions,
I reach out to you; Will you reach out to me?
With all of our voices and all of our visions,
Friends, we could make such sweet harmony.

When have you participated in building bridges across divides of opinions? What lessons did you take from that?

What has allowed you to listen deeply and humbly for the truth held by those with whom you disagree?

What has allowed you to stand apart in your deeply-held beliefs and resist pressure to conform?

RantWoman's reactions to these queries are all in the labels. Going there probably needs an editor / tour guide. RantWoman is not providing one at this point.

Missoula? with Take Me Home, Country Roads - Southern Raised

RantWoman, it's #IndependenceDay? Don't you have something pithy and opinionated to say about the occasion, the state of the country, all the wars and lawyering you could be watching on YouTube?

No! or rather HELL YES, just not here.

This year, Annual Session is coming up in Missoula and  the world gets a timeline cleanse that dates back to a very young RantWoman. RantWoman and the RantParents spent the first year of RantWoman's life in Missoula while RantDad pursued a Masters' degree in music, as well as liberation from his life as music teacher in VERY small MT towns. Imagine a very young RantWoman  wearing only a diaper and the plastic pants fashionable at her first Fourth of July. Family lore involves a lot of watermelon and RantMom blithely hosing the kid off after the feast. RantMom telling the story summoned vague memories of visual fog even though at the time RantWoman had no words for the issue.

Anyway. please listen to the songs below and welcome to the RantWoman time machine.

RantWoman, why this theme song for your sojourn to NPYM Annual session? Why? You're going on an airplane. The closest thing to a country road might be the car trip from the airport. The big hill with the M on it near campus is no comparison with the Blue Ridge mountains. Aren't you afraid of cultural appropriation?

Uhhh, sometimes when God or YouTube gives one a song, just don't argue.

Plus FrankZappa deantl floss tycoon, funky, quirky as it is just does not speak to RantWoman's condition.

B-b-but, what does "home" mean here anyway and WTF going there????

This year marks 20 years that RantWoman has been legally blind. The number of times RantWoman has been to Missoula for Annual Session in that time is a blur.

RantWoman is not sure whether Annual Session was in Missoula the year of the enormous post-surgery bruise all over one side of RantWoman's face,

Sample dialogue: "Did your boyfriend do that to you?" "No, my doctor got paid to do that."

RantWoman thinks Annual session might have been in Missoula a couple years later after RantWoman figured out that a white cane might be really appropriate. That was the year a long car-ride earned the gift of a Service Python. RantWoman is planning packing with TSA considerations in mind but has NO intention of explaining about a service python, and not only because Department of Transportation regulations say NOTHING about service pythons.

Slightly funky timeline:

August ?1961: a train ride where RantWoman delighted (?) all the other passengers by squalling for the entire 10-hour ride.

Somewhere 1961-1962: well baby visit. Congratilations. DNA lotto winner. Congenital cataracts.

fall 1962:  RantDad lands a college teaching job and RantFamily moves to CO. a picture of RantWoman scampering out of a car while RantDad helps a very pregnant RantMom. Family is staying overnight at home of much admired elders.

October 1962: RantBrother arrives, just in time to distract RantMom from the Cuban Missile Crisis.

1963. RantWoman has surgery for congenital cataracts. RantWoman's first pair of glasses arrive by mail on Halloween

1965: Little sister is born. Rant Brother has his first surgery for Congenital cataracts.

1968? Student Union building opens. 3 RantChildren visit often to soak up AC and help put the first scuffs on new stairs.

1969? RantWoman and RantBrother both have surgeries to address scar tissue from the first surgery. Surgery meant no swimming. New glasses meant RantMom claims RantWoman read aloud every road sign on the way back to CO.

1969. Another Summer in Missoula. The Moon Landing. 4 adults, 5 kids. A tiny apartment with weird wet AC."One Small step for Man. One giant Leap for Mankind."

1974? Fourth place in the Montana State spelling bee. Problem word: raucous.

1978. MT All-State orchestra, featuring a work by a Czech composer commissioned on the occasion of the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia after the 1968 Prague Spring. Very dissonant piece even before it was turned over to a high-school orchestra.

So, RantWoman, what are the through lines to today?

Quakers and Christian Nationalism: a minute and....

RantWoman is doing her usual mental and physical sorting in preparation for NPYM Annual Session. In parallel, RantWoman is, remotely, participating in many activities of the American Council of the Blind.

Some of the time, these events have considerations in common.

One example: spending a lot of time crafting some statement or other, figuring out how to shepherd the words through the process of coming to agreement, and then deciding what the heck to do with the statement and / or has the body done anything based on previous such statements.

Another is sharing the light of one community shaped by their circumstances with others, growing the circles of community, solidarity, commitment.

In Quakerese, these statements are called minutes. Sometimes among North Pacific Yearly Meeting friends, these minutes get circulated among monthly meetings and worship groups before Annual Session. Sometimes they get referred to Peace and Social Concerns committee. Quakers are known for wanting to spend a long time wordsmithing. At the same time, some Friends are moved by the march of events to want more perspicacity about when is "good enough" and done in a timely if imperfect way.

The minute below about Quakers and Christian Nationalism from South Mountain Friends Meeting is the current issue at hand. The issue is certainly timely in the social media streams where RantWoman slogs. This fact suggests paths in the "what to do with this statement" vein that might not be standard issue wirte some elected officials but more something like "How can these words guide and strengthen Friends' witness in our various circumstances.

Here is a recent  reflection from Johan Maurer with language that might be useful when actually TALKING TO one's friendly neighborhood or Twitter feed Christian nationalist

And some references from Radical Discipleship – Collective. Convictional. Constructive. Concrete. on RantWoman's mean-to-read list

Radical Discipleship is edited and curated by Tommy Airey (he/him), a post-evangelical pastor at Kardia Kaiomene and the author of Descending Like a Dove: Adventures in Decolonizing Evangelical Christianity  (2018). Send an email to tommyairey@gmail.com if you have questions, comments, concerns or submissions!

With that as a prelude, here is a current DRAFT and update from a version posted at npym.org

Minute on Christian Nationalism

South Mountain Friends Meeting

As Quakers, we believe that everyone possesses the light of the Spirit, which is how we express what Jews and Christians traditionally meant by asserting that everyone is created in God’s image. We also believe that everyone possesses some portion of the truth and that no one possesses total understanding. Still, if a widely held opinion that we regard as mostly erroneous threatens grave harm, we feel called upon to address and oppose it. Such is the case of a cluster of opinions that go under the common name Christian nationalism.

Christian nationalism seeks to merge Christian and American identities. It asserts that the United States was founded as a specifically Christian nation; that it is necessary to be a Christian to be a true American; and that Christianity should be favored and actively supported by the state. A frequent corollary of this ideology is that the United States has been chosen to impose its will on other nations in God’s name. Additionally, it often overlaps with, and provides cover for, white supremacy and racial subjugation at home as well as abroad.

We reject all these tenets and implications of Christian nationalism. It distorts both the spirit of our country and of Christianity itself. To be an American does not require adherence to any one religion or to any religion at all. And to adhere to Christianity or any other world religion does not require residence in any one country. People are bound to their countries by their citizenship and to their religions by their faith.

In alignment with our testimony of peace, we focus our actions of dismantling such oppressive, aggressive, and authoritarian systems as Christian nationalism. At the same time, our testimony of equality guides us to not condemn individual Christian nationalists.

We commit to educating members of local faith communities and the public at large about the inherent false narratives and extreme threat to democracy posed by Christian nationalism.  We call upon ourselves to provide teach-ins, show relevant films, and hold conversation geared toward raising awareness.  We recommend that fellow Quakers educate themselves through books and videos and then alert their communities to the reality that Christian nationalism is a political movement based in power that masquerades as a religion that is known for mercy and compassion.

"Bloodbath?" Oh, really?

RantWoman is taking a little bit of a break from relentless ministry about matters of disability and inclusion. RantWoman has acquired a serious YouTube habit, and RantWoman sees no reason why readers of this blog should be deprived of RantWoman's insights just because they get splattered all over other venues.

(There are abundant videos about why US commentators are all hot about the word "bloodbath." RantWoman recalls all the Twitter trash talk early in #DonTheCon reign of error about nuclear weapons and fortunately no one got nuked. HOWEVER, RantWoman is still inclined, on top of all the lies and garbage EX PResident Gropesaurus has been spewing, to take the word seriously. Plus, the problem is not only #DonTheCon but also his Felon Choir.)

Enjoy?

The commentariat needs to get over their Trump Inevitability syndrome and start imagining and asking about other scenarios. What can / must voters do to ensure that Trump loses? How busy will his court calendar be when he does?

The #GOP needs to start loudly and publicly saying they WILL find another candidate. Hard to do if Trumplings have taken over the RNC, but surely lawyers and mental health professionals can find a way. This MUST come from the GOP. Can they or ordinary citizens petition Judge Chutkan? Can she revoke his release while the immunity case is pending? I assume there is no point in petitioning Judge Cannon, and I think it's too much to ask of Judge McAfee even though the scope of the cases before him would suggest it. Or should people just petition all the judges?

#DonThe Con is a danger to himself and to others. He is a danger to himself because he keeps blowing through lawyers and blowing lots of defenses. He is a danger to others because of death threats and swatting. Some of the time he appears to know right from wrong, but he is incapable of assisting in his own defense. Would a mental health hold sit better with MAGA than flat out pretrial detention? Worth trying.

How many hundreds of surveillance warrants and social media monitors would be needed to quash anything that might come up?

Listening for God 2: Viral video of New Speaker listening to God

God works in mysterious ways.

RantWoman is NOT unconcerned about the violent language of Christian Nationalism or about whether or not religious pluralism is alive and well in the mind of the person second in line to succeed the President.

Dude says he listens to God.

Dude certainly uses Biblical language.

Dude says the Holy Spirit is running around in his head in a way that makes some commentators want to refer him for a 72-hour mental health hold somewhere.

So far, Dude could be a lot of Quakers RantWoman has met

Dude's use of a porn monitoring app WITH HIS NOT QUITE ADULT SON strikes RantWoman as possibly invasive and probably NOT the weirdest form of parenting out there.

Dude talks about Moses? Does this mean wandering in a desert for 40 years due to #ClimateChange? Does he mean MAYBE draining the #GOP swamp of the do-nothing voices of #angertainment?

There are many people of faith who take seriously the science of the #ClimateCrisis.

People's views evolve. Think Obama and the question of same-sex marriage.

Dude is in no danger of becoming Vice President and needing to preside over the certification of the next Presidential election.

RantWoman HOPES that fear of theocratic tendencies running amok across our nation's spiritual landscape will motivate people with a broader vision of individual and community calls to GET OUT AND VOTE. Flip enough Congressional districts to free the current speaker of any temptation to act with anything less than humility.

RantWoman as a proud resident of the riot-riddled Sodom and Gomorrah known to more modest souls as Seattle may or may not be the best person to advise the 4th district of LA about actually voting this guy out of office, but RantWoman is called not to ignore any Congressional district and is still seasoning how that is supposed to look.

FCNL approves new statement on reproductive healthcare

FCNL Revised policy on Reproductive Healthcare

Readers who just want to see the final text of the revised policy feel free to skip the rest of this.

RantWoman should let the policy stand on its own, but RantWoman wants to offer particular appreciation for LOTS of points:

--Having easy online access to the final version of the document very shortly after the final wording was approved

--The last round of seasoning, one of those Quaker moments where it seems like something is almost done and suddenly like the loops of a labyrinth, there are two not exactly contradictory but powerful objections to wording. RantWoman lives on West Coast time even when Zooming for events on the East Coast soRantWoman just had to let wordsmiths wordsmith and leave the final decision to an Early Morning Meeting for business.

--The very well-led and carefully tended work of the FCNL policy committee between last year's annual meeting and the 2023 Annual meeting.

Maybe that is all RantWoman needs to say about this exact topic.

Trump as icon. Martyrdom? And a mugshot. Ali Velshi of MSNBC : Stop allowing Trump to thrive off martyrdom

This post is a rough draft that may or may not be insearch of a wider forum.

There is MUCH to argue about and below the video are some peculiarly RantWoman takes.

Apologies to all other commenters: RantWoman has yet to go looking for a good news crawler to help digest comments. But here are some authentic RantWoman comments.

Re Martyrdom, Thanks but NO THANKS, not on my behalf. For one thing, your name is NOT Jesus.

It does seem like an important task to figure out what standards can help deprogram devotees to Mr. #P01135809. For me start with No one is above the law and LOOK at all the people he's screwing over. He is just pathetic in so many ways. At a certain point even people who care about an alcoholic STOP ENABLING HIM.

There is a whole presidential campaign ahead of us. I might personally be perfectly fine with #TFG sucking up all the small #GOP donations even if the legal Trumparama keeps attention on on  #POTUS45 rather than serious issues facing the country, but I know that is BAD for the country. I hope people of conscience all over the political spectrum can put #CountryOverParty and find ways to drive conversation toward real issues.

Equally important rant: treat polls with EXTREME caution, both because of history of misusing polls and because it's time people said as many ways as possible #TFG is leading among Republican primary voters who are nowhere near a majority of voters.

As for iconography, the famous mugshot is public domain. I would seriously consider buying a shirt sold by someone I want to support that has MY ASS GOT ARRESTED in big letters across the mugshot on the front and either Country over party or No One is Above The Law in big letters on the back.

Fred Wellman and Ben Hodges with MANY warnings and insights

Fred Wellman and Ben Hodges discuss Ukraine, weapons, military readiness, GOP politics.

Worth a listen even if "How we learned to have a better war after Iraq and Afghanistan is a line of thinking one might be ambivalent about.

Clearly one part of any after-war scenario will be a bunch of countries needing to replace all the weapons they have been using.

Also, RantWoman does not have any precise material about the US decision to send cluster bombs to Ukraine. The NPR line: Russia has distributed so many mines that Ukraine is going to need help about demining anyway. A very high percentage of Russian mines are duds; a much lower percentage of US cluster bombs are duds. So somehow... At the same time, RantWoman has ZERO inclination to tell Ukraine what they do or don't need.

RantWoman is not into opining about the politics of which countries give Ukraine what.

PS. RantWoman also definitely means to check out forgottendemocrats.org/ which according to the website is committed to ensure that no Republican runs for office uncontested.

PPS RantWoman is amused or something by two things: first Meidas Touch Network videos have ads usually for some upscale mostly guy themed products. Second, Youtube tends to run ads in the middle of the already imbedded ads. Too much of something...

Microaggressions, mosquito bites, malaria, and a major anti-affirmative Supreme Court Ruling

RantWoman is trying to settle her soul, organize some chores that could be done while Zooming, and recalibrate a body clock destined to need to operate for several days at an hour before God herself is awake.

RantWoman is talking about the FGC Gathering, two national blind consumer organizations, and then NPYM Annual Session, calling us to build the beloved community.

Speaking of mosquitos, presenting Mosquito borne disease as national security threat
Beau of the Fifth column: could it be...climate change???

And speaking of mosquitos gone bananas, or at least as bananas as the Supreme Court can go in an affirmative action ruling, RantWoman is skipping multiple videos of doom and gloom and woe are we. That stuff is important

AND

NO ONE, not even plaintiffs in a lawsuit is guaranteed admission to Harvard

AND

Celebrate all the organizations that filed Friend of the Court briefs about the value of affirmative action

Go with that while RantWoman figures out whether she can and should say more in the No One is guaranteed admission to Harvard theme.

There are no content warnings for life! 2023 edition

The short version of this post: RantWoman probably is going to change the title of an old blog post, add some headings to improve blind person navigability, and cite thie post to add context acknowledging that the older post could be problematic in a number of ways for different readers. RantWoman is disinclined to edit history, even though the older post like much on this blog could stand some editing. RantWoman INTENDS both this post and the older post as part of many conversations about child safety and individual life journeys.

In fine Quakerly way, RantWoman has seasoned this with two trusted members of the community. Neither of them interacted in depth with RantWoman's willingness to consider whether anything in the post might run afoul of Blogger guidelines. More below.

The slightly longer version:

1. Recently RantWoman received email from Blogger informing her that a years old blog post has been "unpublished," rendered unfit for human consumption. The email comes with links to terms of service and content policy with an invitation to appeal and suggestions about options to address the concerns identified.

Blogger Content Guidelines

Why was your blog post unpublished?

Your content has violated our Malware and Viruses policy. Please visit

our Community Guidelines page linked in this email to learn more.

Malware?

The technological elements of the post are no different than many other posts, plain text and a couple links either to blogger or to other sites. If the malware issue is another site, RantWoman is happy to hear suggestions about who and how to troubleshoot that.

So that leaves the community guidelines, which RantWoman step by step tackles here.

2. This post contains a lot of Quaker jargon. Non-Quaker readers are invited either to use your own search engines or to leave comments asking RantWoman to explain further. RantWoman only posts comments with the author's permission.

3. The original post was written before RantWoman began her practice of posting really blunt advisories about sensitive content at the beginning of many posts. RantWoman, honestly, also had not thought about content guidelines. RantWoman recognizes that the content of the old post is challenging but believes it needs to remain available in the interest of paths to continued discussion of things that affect many families.

4. RantWoman will leave the original frank title in the text of the post. The title is meant to acknowledge that people may for many reasons have sex offender issues on their minds a lot of the time and there are things that come of that. Despite the title, the old post is NOT an endorsement of sex offenders, an accusation that came RantWoman's way in a recent Twitter conversation about a messy family situation in the news. It is, however, part of one Quaker meeting's walk with questions about community safety, supporting a low-level sex offender, and intending also to walk alongside the complex experiences of individuals impacted personally by related issues. It is a long story. A lot about RantWoman's perspective can be found under the label Safest though that label also contains some other content related to general principles RantWoman considers relevant.

Events all started with a long ago conversation during coffee hour.

The post also contains a link about a Meeting for Business at another Quaker meeting where similar subjects are talked about.

5. The post was written at a time when people with titles implying they were prepared to help members of the community season different aspect of the situation were, for RantWoman, less than astute and less than helpful and also obtuse about another change occuring in RantWoman's life. (speaking VERY plainly, in connection with midlife vision loss, RantWoman was dealing both with a lot of generalized ableism and with physical and emotional abuse from one specific member of the community. This walk continues to evolve. Except for the point that any kind of disability can make people particularly vulnerable, RantWoman wants here to stick to questions of how to talk about experiences related to sex offenders) RantWoman very much appreciates currently having a sense of people she can ask to look at such things.

One of RantWoman's advisors mentioned above just said "there are no content warnings for life."

The other said basically the same thing and suggested that people can just absent themselves from triggering material. Um, in RantWoman's experience, that is not necessarily possible. Sometimes job responsibilities require one to walk over the rocky territory of something from the past in order to do better going forward about keeping people and communities safe. In one case, RantWoman was able to add one appropriate line to an insurance policy. Doing more, like topical staff training was beyond RantWoman's light. RantWoman later gratefully ceded many topics to a non-profit much better equipped than RantWoman was, notwithstanding all the experiences connected with questions of worshipping with sex offenders and evolution of awareness about realities in RantWoman's family.

6. In the US national cultural war Zeitgeist both terminology and discussion of hot button issues are all over the place and definitely not in centered, well-seasoned form. RantWoman tries to offer thoughtful prayerful interventions but not to get sucked too far down rabbit holes or electronic time sinks. Some of the time RantWoman succeeds.

With all that in mind, readers who are not prepared to think about the day to day realities experienced by many survivors of sexual abuse and their loved ones, please either know what you are getting into by reading on or feel free to click away to something else.

In Light and Faithfulness

Reproductive Health: Today's rants

RantWoman is not doing so well about convening groups of Friends to discuss the FCNL discernment on Reproductive health.

Most recent post with background links

RantWoman has sent email inquiries two directions locally. So far Crickets. RantWoman will try again on both next week after a clogged schedule this weekend.

RantWoman also tried to respond to something from a larger group. RantWoman walked on one person'f feet and feels badly; a related conversation got derailed by a round of pronoun policing. RantWooman is unclear whether she will try again.

RantWoman understands FCNL's desire for clear policy direction.

Look people, RantWoman does NOT think people need to unite behind single statements. RantWoman wants people to spend time in prayerful threshing, collect comments and send them off into the larger river of discernment.

AND

Repeating, RantWoman thinks it will be extremely valuable for Quakers from different states with different legal environments to talk to each other.

At this point, RantWoman is having enough trouble herding her own thoughts in helpful direction that RantWoman may simply offer up blog posts, let go of any need for feedback. trust that the FCNL policy committee and other Friends who might be involved in this discernment find something useful here.

Repeating the most recent set of popcorn kernels

Lately, RantWoman has been wrestling with parents' rights rhetoric.

Parents should of course talk to their own kids but everything to do with sex and sexuality melts too many Parents' brains. Many who are cool and realistic are now terrified by realities in their home states. This means need for at least mental and maybe electronic maps of where it is safe, legal, easy to get both abortion care and gender affirming care.

And YES, gender affirming care belongs in the conversation. That is, RantWoman really wants any policy statement to reflect both privacy in difficult personal decisions and respect for medical providers professional judgment over the uninformed depradations of random legislators with no medical qualification.

More pointed media bits.

YES! Dialogues in Faith Communities about property stewardship and community vision.

Spiral of Footprints with the words Listen Learn Act Reflect around the outside
Graphic from the
Faith Land Initiative website
because this post needs a visual

Yes! Yes to the Church Council of Greater Seattle Faith Land Initiative !

YES to faith communities engaging actively about growth projections indicating that a million people are likely to come to this region by 2050 and where to put them all is going to be an acute concern for everyone.

YES to a certain Meeting RantWoman is supposed magically to stop caring about participating WITH OTHER FAITH COMMUNITIES in something that feels much more like life-embracing movements of Spirit than tiring discussion from a few years ago about "condo church" in the University District.

YES to a group of Friends offering time for a process that will last a year at least and YES to there being at least ONE Friend younger than 60 among this group.

YES to intentional discussions that cultivate shared work and wider conversations than one small committee trying to fit a bunch of things easily into boxes.

YES AND

Early in a previous attempt at property discernment, RantWoman suggested just developing a glossary of terms that might be valuable in a conversation. Discernment about property matters involves terms from many different language domains. Not everyone is going to become urban planners or experts in every angle but in RantWoman's experience common vocabularies that do not make assumptions or presuppose any direction for a final destination can be extremely valuable. Ignoring this suggestion did NOT enhance RantWoman's confidence in previous process. RantWoman would be thrilled if this new process adopts RantWoman's suggestion or perhaps has already thought about this.

RantWoman realizes discernment about faith community property is not necessarily about the spiritual and worship life of any single faith community. RantWoman also hopes that discernment well done will bring to life better communities of all kinds

RantWoman lives in two worlds as far as advocacy / public ministry. Transportation advocates tend to go "Huh? when RantWoman wants to think of faith communities. And some of RantWoman's faith community work is with people who go "Huh?" about transportation issues. RantWoman would love it if the Faith Land Initiative can help build bridges about transportation issues both at a regional scale and in terms of one of RantWoman's favorite mantras about safe continuous  travel networks for all modes..

RantWoman craves a process that also engages with hard realities about climate change, the needs of people of different ages, and earth-friendly amenities.

People with Disabilities? The voices of PWD? Access needs even to be part of a process!

RantWoman needs to speak of African American Church lady hats and how housing and travel patterns intersect about people's ability to worship together. RantWoman some years ago caught a bus to Meeting near an African American church known for strong community presence. It made RantWoman sad to realize that because of housing displacement most of the people who came on Sundays all dressed up drove in from the 'burbs, the areas they could afford to live in.

RantWoman needs to speak of the Sunday Morning God bus and the fate of faith communities along a certain bus routes. RantWoman can be all over concepts such as "time to pray" on the bus. RantWoman thinks it's equally important though to think of models such as the 15-minute city full of neighborhoods where most people can live within a 15-minute WALK of work and most of what they need for daily lives.

In any case, YES! KEEP TALKING.

Disability Justice--and REALLY practical down to earth advocacy

RantWoman notes the existence of #DisabilityPrideMonth. In true Quaker fashion, there should be Disability Pride all the time but since the anniversary of the signing of  the Americans with Disabilities Act will soon be upon us, RantWoman is going to grab a few items seasoned with characteristically piquant RantWoman commentary.

RantWoman has not checked but thinks the enumeration in this video of Disability Justice principles is slightly different and in any case briefer than previous articles.

RantWoman imagines some readers will need to filter some of the rhetoric. RantWoman herself is somewhere in the camp of "where is the love?" The video also reports on really powerful initiatives in New York.

Here a weird disability culture note: the video opens with the speaker offering a physical description of herself. The speaker also makes the point that this is an access / inclusion gesture regardless of how a call participant may be connected. Among blind people this practice is highly controversial: some blind people like it fine as long as it is brief; some blind people really hate it.

There was a resolution at "those other blind people's convention soundly condemning the practice. The author of the resolution is African American (as in father from Africa) and his wife is Japanese American but somehow the resolution got interpreted as opposition to the organization's #DEI / DEIA initiative. RantWoman is glad the resolution failed and somehow soothed in the thought that even without sacred Quaker process discussions can go in unpredictable directions.

Finally a dollop of alphabet soup just to garnish this post: DEI / DEIA and SPICES + J??

Morning reading and statements to the troops

To get the day off to some kind of not really perfect start
An item from Bulletin of the Atomic Sciences via Twitter

RantWoman has been seasoning the following concerns:

--It is grotesque that nuclear powerS get away with horrific violence against civilian populations because everyone is afraid that confronting them will lead to nuclear war.

--RantWoman wonders whether the think tanks of the world think as much about what happens if nuclear power plants come under enemy attack as they have about nuclear weapons. There is the proliferation risk associated with different reactor designs, but RantWoman is not familiar with a lot of public-facing discussion of the enemy attack scenario. Note to self: RantWoman, your masters thesis? Some up-to-date inquiry?

--Sure. This is all about national sovereignty. When the Soviet Union fell apart, Ukraine gave up the nuclear weapons stationed on its territory based on the promise that other countries would help look out for it. AND now Ukraine gets neither a no-fly zone nor MiGs the Poles would have been happy to transfer. RantWoman is not Not NOT saying more weapons would be a good idea here. RantWoman is simply noting a head scratcher perspective.

--In the category of God gets things done all kinds of ways, will this whole episode accelerate ashift to renewable energy, cause people to redesign whole transportation networks to be less dependent on fossil fuels, and spark a giant "world peace through better sidewalks" campaign? RantWoman can hope!

And two videos for the troops.

This isZelensky in Russian. He delivered the same message in Ukrainian. They are NOT the same language.

And here is Putin also on sacrifices.

"Joyful, hard work (in support of Indigenous People) is happening in North Pacific Yearly Meeting"

RantWoman, never mind the gushy cloyingly exuberant billing. FIRST post the link to the DRAFT NPYM Minute in Support of Indigenous People (PDF) and let Friends read it for themselves.

Joyful?

You mean like talking about, oh, I dunno, RACISM or ABLEISM?

RantWoman, credit for good intentions?

Yes, OF COURSE support of indigenous people is important. No, of COURSE this minutes is not just about more virtue signalling not really rooted in....Wait A MINUTE!

"Doctrine of Discovery:" Can we start with maybe a 25-100 word definition of what we are supposed to be repudiating?

Indian Boarding Schools? Have there been any, Quaker or not, in any of WA, OR, ID, MT (WY), the states encompassed by North Pacific Yearly Meeting?

Do NPYM Friends get a pass on thinking about Quaker boarding schools just because European colonization was in effect full steam long before there were Quakers in the lands of NPYM?

What if we start not just with ideas from far away and the founding of the republic. What if we start with some topics and names closer to home? A sampling on RantWoman's mind:

missing and exploited indigenous women

the Lummi canoe journey

the Duwamish longhouse

casinos

fishing rights on Hood Canal

salmon recovery

federal recognition or lack thereof

"Idaho's Forgotten War."

The Custer Battle

forced conversion

Mark Trahant and his Indian Country blog

Sherman Alexie

Seattle CM Deborah Juarez

the Homestead Act

Natural resource management including minerals, timber, water

Ok, ok, RantWoman, what do you want to happen to the minute?

Hold everyone in the Light while we figure it out.

All day RantWoman has been vacillating between "Lay Down Fourth Saturday Worship" and "rock on" because there is some need twitching nearby.

Actually, twitching about Fourth Saturday worship is not all RantWoman has been doing.

Also:

conspiring with other blind people and able med students about multilingual and accessible prescription label options. STAY Tuned

Buying cat food

Celebrating the life of Thich Nhat Hahn.

Among other things.

So bring yourselves, your twitches, your still unordered calendars, your faltering new year's resolutions and Light looking forward.

It's another FOURTH Saturday Worship.
