Jacob Hoopes surrenders to begin serving 900 days in prison

For the record:

1. RantWoman is a judgmental WITCH about any event where a law enforcement officer gets hit in or near the eye because a protestor throws a rock. Doesn't matter the protest. Doesn't matter if the protest is about odious and despicable official behavior. RantWoman as a legally blind / blind / low vision (choose a label) person is just a judgmental WITCH.

2. RantWoman is also a judgmental witch about everything to do with ICE. RantWoman is happy to pray that all will immediately repent, re-evaluate their lives, and work for real justice.

3. RantWoman has gone to jail more than once for actions related to protesting. Every single time, RantWoman winds up reflecting on her own privilege, By privilege, RantWoman means not only big differences between her life and the lives of others around her but also the number of potentially awkward moments when RantWoman hears "Good for you."  See also the history of early Quakers going to prison for practicing their faith and turning into giant prison reformers. What will that bode, for Jacob and for everyone following his case.

With that as intro:

Hoopes Begins 30-Month Prison Sentence at Minimum-Security Camp in Oregon [Updated] - Friends Journal

from the Daily Bulletin at Annual Session

Dear NPYM Friends,

We dropped our son Jacob Hoopes off at prison in Sheridan, Oregon, this afternoon. Our hearts are heavy, but our spirits are buoyed up by the tremendous love and Light that has been pouring in from all corners of the Earth. Thank you, more than words can say.

We have updated the https://www.900daysoflight.com/ webpage (copy and paste the url) with a brief video of Jacob, which he filmed before surrendering himself. As we said our farewells, Jacob showed his extraordinary courage, present-mindedness, and mettle. I believe in him. And thanks to so much love from so many supporters, he believes in himself, too.

Onward, with love overflowing,

Tom Hoopes

RantWoman quite likes the "Adopt-a-Day" concept mentioned on the website. RantWoman notes that the earliest available free day is in October. RantWoman would love a way to know what activities will come with every adopted day. RantWoman will continue to spend some part of every day fighting the horrible attitudes among many in the US who have gotten the country and ICE to the outrageous mess where the US currently finds ourselves.

And one venue for this fight: plenty of people in RantWoman's circles who think the country is already full and there are not enough resources that blind people need now so we can't afford to let anyone else in. NO sense at all that defending people's civil rights means defending everyone's civil rights.

Worship with Quakers on July 4

Love As Action July 4 2026

Announcement:

Please join a group of Quakers on Saturday, July 4, 2026 in one-hour of silent worship at the Federal Office Building at the corner of 2nd Avenue and Madison Street, Seattle Washington at 11 am  to bear witness to the disruption and dehumanization that authoritarian actions are inflicting in our communities. This shared witness reflects core Quaker principles: peace, equality, integrity, and community and it is a visible commitment to justice and compassion. By standing together in quiet waiting worship, we affirm that every person has worth, that fear and violence must give way to love and fairness, and that our communities thrive when all are welcomed. Our hope is that our presence will give heart to all who see us - including through media and online - and remind everyone of our moral obligations to one another.  This event is sponsored by the American Friends Service Committee and the Peace and Social Concerns Committees of North Pacific Yearly Meeting and University Friends Meeting.
We will join together in one hour of silent witness and invite all to bring water, weather appropriate clothes, a portable chair (if needed) and anything else you need to be safe and comfortable. Bring signs showing the signs of authoritarianism you see in your community and messages of love and support for communities that are suffering.
Please let us know that you are coming by registering at: https://www.mobilize.us/afscfriendsengagement/event/969643/

If you have any questions feel free to reach out to your local organizer Jonathan Betz-Zall jbetzzall@gmail.com or  LoveasAction@afsc.org. Find updates at https://afsc.org/love-action

Seafarer Day and seafarers still trapped: diplomacy, deterrence, defusing?

#Iran #Oman #PersianGulf #InternationalMaritimeOrganization

President #StableGenius keeps claiming the #StraitOfHormuz is open. It clearly is not. RantWoman sees no reason that more missiles will help.

This video provides lots of details that may not make it into other reporting.

The commercial ship that was hit by Iran was not following the procedure set up by the International Maritime Organization.

On Day of the Seafarer, remember the 1.5 million seafarers who help move billions of tons of cargo every year.

RIP Nasturtiums in Salad Friend

Red and Yellow nasturtiums
Image from High Mowing
Organic Seed Company

Nasturtiums in Salad Friend has passed away. She came up in passing in a conversation about RantMom. Nasturtiums in Salad Friend has been failing for a number of years and in hospice for the last several months. Word is, Nasturtiums in Salad Friend had good conversations; other Friends later tried to call her the night before she was found. She was found when a retirement community staffperson knocked to take her for breakfast. Rest in Peace Friend

Readers who would, in memoriam, enjoy various RantWoman ramblings and reflections on Nasturtiums in Salad Friend and community life are invited to use the word nasturtiums in the search bar.

As luck and providence would have it, RantMom and Nasturtiums in Salad Friend lived in the same retirement community for a number of years including the years of #pandemic lockdown. Nasturtiums in Salad gardening proclivities were still going strong, though not on quite as grand a scale as when Nasturtiums in Salad Friend was working on a composting toilet project at the large community garden where she devoted a lot of time.

Nasturtiums in Salad Friend also continued her lifelong gift for growing community by creating space for people to make beaded jewelry, napkin rings, and other craft products in the retirement community where RantMom also lived. This fact makes RantWoman smile, all the more since Nasturtiums in Salad Friend evoked the kind of patient confidence that carried RantMom through the adventure of making a set of napkin rings in spite of RantMom's fingers not working well for quite a while.

RantMom's body has reached a point beyond the reach of magic wands to fix all that is not working. Today, after two rough days of changes, RantMom's hands flutter as if she is trying to do something though RantWoman cannot tell what. Maybe in addition to Christ among us here and now, there is an afterlife where both lovers of flowers can garden freely with no more pain and joyful results.

A department of DEFENSE protects everyone. A department of WAR on the other hand....

Let's talk about the GOP taking a holiday instead of paying troops....

I am steamed that our witless #SecDef has proclaimed the department he heads the Department of WAR. He is also cancelling important programs such as the cyber security command. Do not forget firing leaders left and right for being the wrong color or gender. So anyone who wants to contain the defense budget might be forgiven for saying well, as long as the administration is weakening national security in myriad ways, let's not pay the troops either.

If we still had a department of DEFENSE that applied to all of the US, ordinary working people and military families should BOTH get affordable health care. The #GOP leadership needs to grow spines, STOP lying and STOP SENDING THEIR HOUSES ON VACATION and sit down. Get back to work and work across the aisle

From 34 felonies to 34 Nobel Prizes???? It's a CULT, ookay?

Look, RantWoman is not totally charmed by the Occupy Democrats, but all she could do about the beginning clips was roll on the floor laughing. See if you can tell what absurdities RantWoman was laughing about.

Trump Gets BRUTAL NEWS About His NOBEL PRIZE Nomination🚨

Posted in fond memory of a certain Weighty Quaker, founding member of UFM, noted for interest in forestry and for going to Japan to help rebuild houses after WWII. That Friend desperately wanted a Nobel Prize and even got nominated, but the award never came his way.

Thought crime: Arrests at Westminster Quaker Meeting House for planning resistance????

HOLY SHIT.

Is there some kind of global epidemic of police doing high drama smash and grabs????

Some other news links "on the other side" as some media voices are wont to say.

First some background.

RantWoman has a new fave Quaker Channel., Quaker It Up.

"It's in British" to quote a weighty friend decades ago.

RantWoman has not yet dipped her toes into BlueSky partly because RantWoman spends a certain amount of online time defending principles such as freedom of religion and religious pluralism in a certain billionaire's electronic sandbox.

In any case, the news as it's understood tonight.

RantWoman is intrigued by a video that makes a lot of points in Quakerese and says NOTHING about why police raided a Quaker meetinghouse.

Links, in order of what RantWoman considers most responsible media outlets
(PS if you have a few dollars to help keep the Guardian afloat, reliable info is extremely valuable.

RantWoman might have posted more links but at this point, the computer she regularly uses did one of its periodic Microsoft Edge hiccups and RantWoman had to retrace her steps. So onward!

Free speech standards and laws are different in the UK. This commentary mentions a recently enacted "anti-protest legislation."

Maggie Haberman Trump whisperer on Pete Hegseth

What to do if you appear to have a massive alcohol problem and mentioned for a job with an adjudicated rapist and unabashed sex predator? Definitely bring up a #SCOTUS confirmation where someone who also likes beer and faced down a decades old accusation of sexual assault got confirmed partly because the President who nominated the judge suppressed thousands of reports to the FBI. The sexual harassment and drunkenness accusations are a lot fresher and NOTHING about Hegseth's financial mismanagement record suggests he will be anywhere near competent to ensure a bipartisan audit, let alone manage the Pentagon budget. I don't care what Hegseth's mom says. Women across the political spectrum are sick of the Rapist Elect putting in place other rapists. And the number of Hegseth's drunken fiascoes definitely does not bode well for his ability to maintain composure during a global crisis. Ba-bye Pete.

PS, from another Twitter / x rant: The Department of Defense is supposed to defend all of the US, not just drunk Christians who shriek kill all Muslims.

PPS. Between the famous letter from Hegseth's mom and coworkers' comments about Pete's treatment of female coworkers, RantWoman wonders whether Pete's own difficulty about women in combat might partly from an inability to think about women any other way than opportunities to play grabass.

More #CeaseFireNow Protesters blocking roads, this time near LAX Airport

Yep. Traffic jams are inconvenient.

Not as inconvenient as rocket attacks, mass murder, settler violence OR becoming in anyway complicit with either side of such violence.

DEAL WITH IT.

PS. For all you #J6 violence is necessary, violence is justified souls, please note:

Number of police officers assaulted in all of this week's #CeaseFireNow demos: ZERO

Value of property destroyed ZERO

PPS. Heartfelt prayers for everyone who is hurt, horrified, disgusted, terrified.

BLOWBACK, protests, Queen Rania of Jordan, other voices. Cease Fire Now

Hopefully by the time this posts, there will be released prisoners, hostages, Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, and serious negotiations about WHAT NEXT.

RantWoman LOVES Roland Martin because he and his guests DO NOT pull punches.
RantWoman is a little more skeptical of Malcolm Nance partly BECAUSE he just keeps citing what has been done before when oh yeah that was objectionable too. Interesting that BY THE END he MAYBE gets around to something HAS TO BE different this time.
Agrees actually with Mehdi Hasan about Israel's role in creating Hamas.

Adult Religious Education 11 5 about FCNL and the current Middle East situation.

The information here is from Adult Religious Education November 5, 2023.

RantWoman's key takeaways:

Look for the peacemakers. There are peacemakers out there but they get marginalized.

Lift up marginalized voices

Public Pressure works.

(from RantWoman based on a Beau of The Fifth column about Change of Tone: diplomacy works, at least as far as helping send messages that many parties do not want things to escalate.)

Queries

The US invests heavily in war.  What would it mean to fight for peace?

How can we be supportive of Palestine without being against Israel? Or vice versa?

How can we see the humanity in everyone when there are two sides?

And allies of each side and the long game in the middle East and beyond?

https://www.youtube.com/@BeauoftheFifthColumn

Beau lives in FL. He clearly has some kind of military or national security background. He does videos in a variety of really fun T-shirts. He answers lots of questions very respectfully and responds in concise and centered ways to whatever the thread of the day is. Sometimes several videos per day.

On the way to retirement, General Mark Milley excoriates the former Commander in Chief plus other related items.

RantWoman, you're a QUAKER. Why you gotta post all this stuff about military matters?

1. God in his / her wisdom, colossal sense of irony landed RantWoman in an interdisciplinary area studies MA program studying alongside what the military calls Foreign Area Officers.

2. As General Milley says below, the relation between the military and the rest of government is unique in the US and whether we are going to take care of our Constution or want to adjust certain provisions, we need to understand and respect that. In furtherance of this goal, RantWoman desparately wishes all states would add minimal standards of basic civics knowledge as conditions for running for public office.

3. RantWoman, after she finishes her own commentary will include a recent video from Jake Broe about Russia and Ukraine. The first 17 minutes or so are pretty usually reporting about Russia doing war very badly. This is followed by the Estonian prime minister talking about life under Soviet rule. This is followed by a clip of some elderly Russians who probably are no threat militarily but do want to reclaim Alaska and rescue it from fascism. Forgive RantWoman: if you're going to do it right, why stop at Alaska. RantWoman is cautious about throwing around the word fascism, but RantWoman can definitely think of some figures she would be happy to be liberated from. RantWoman is not sure the patriotic elderly Russians in the video would be the ones to do it though.

Now, let us start with General Mark Milley retiring, releasing a book that WILL go on RantWoman's mean to read list, and excoriating his former Commander in Chief on entirely reasonable grounds.

Anyone remember early in the reign of now #P01135809 when somehow the President threatening North Korea with nuclear war did not violate Twitter's content guidelines? In that context, imagine if you are a foreign leader hearing all the internet chatter leading up to the #January6 insurrection. Part of peacemaking in that interval: General Milley picked up the phone and called his counterpart in China. Gen. Milley also explicitly and individualy checked that everyone immediately under him would resist illegal orders coming from the President. In other words, General Milley is one of the figures who absolutely did the right thing as #J6 unfolded and leading up to it.

Now please enjoy some videos.

Headline is the understatement of the year.

Sen. Tuberville (R AL) and confirmation
On a tangentially related note, RantWoman does not know whether to pray for an opportunity to offer Sen. Tommy Tuberville R, AL a piece of her mind to his face OR to pray that she is never offered the temptation.

First, a word of gratitude for the US Senate moving at least Gen. Brown's nomination to replace Gen. Milley as head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff past the hold that Sen. Tuberville has placed on military promotions in furtherance of his allegedly "prolife" tunnel vision.

RantWoman apologizes for not grabbing links to the clips but here are some low points recently from Sen. Tuberville.

Senator Tuberville probably rose to football coach greatness on the backs of predominatly players of color. This did not stop him in context of the military confirmation holds, from making one racist implication after another that African American troops just aren't as good as white ones and that frank Nazis are just patriotic Americans. Apparently Sen. Tuberville has not considered the degree to which people of color are overrepresented in the US all volunteer military.

In any case, RantWoman wants to express gratitude that Sen. Tuberville, who has never served in the military, got SOUNDLY spanked by Sen. Mark Kelly on behalf of several veterans, some who have seen combat about Tuberville's impact on readiness and the military's ability to do what asked.

Who killed VT, day 2 and more

Various war stuff

William Spaniel: Russia has a combat compliance problem

Crimea is on fire; people want putin to step down

Note to self: look up what the Hindustani Times is saying.

Also, RantWoman can't deal with any more war footage so save drones, Russia's thermobaic weapon (flamethrower) whatever Ukraine is getting from Israel, which navy can't go where for another day.

Special "hold a fool ferociously in the Light" for Marjorie Taylor Greene and everyone else who "just wants peace."

(RantWoman will write "I will not say 'Putin stooge'" 500 times in Braille)

There was a bonus segment to the famous MTG interview on CBS. One of the videos, oddly enough considering MTG is an antivaxxing diva, was SPONSORED BY PFIZER. It's Youtube. I don't know what that sponsorship means.

In the supplemental segment MTG said "Ukraine isn't the 51st state." Um, yeah. The #GOP is going bananas over legit refugees arriving at the southern border on foot. Just imagine if they came in tanks. And this chick is on the Homeland Security committee and on the Trying to exert Oversight over things they have no jurisdiction over committee.

Another cynical comment: western defense contractors are quietly salivating over all the old Soviet era tanks from Eastern Europe getting donated to the Ukrainian war effort: the assumption is that everyone will need to buy NEW tanks and of course they will buy them from Western suppliers.Of COURSE They will.

ALMOST enough to want to deliver some FCNL materials on cutting the defense budget as part of efforts to cut spending growth. Almost, because then one has to figure out both how to frame it and how to get past an urge to barf on people's shoes just to get in the door.

And speaking of just wanting peace, Russia is President of the UN Security Council for its regular rotation for the next 3(?) months.

RantWoman means to look at the Chinese plan which should go nowhere plan and also something that came up in one of yesterday's videos about something that Belarus may be floating.

Quaker ChangerMaker event: Russia, Ukraine, and the Peace Testimony

RantWoman really needed today's FCNL Quaker Changemaker Event about the war in Ukraine and the Peace testimony.

Readers are going to have to wait for a link to the whole video but here is the closing paragraph.

Posted in chat by Timothy Gee, General Secretary, FWCC to Everyone 10:43 AM

"We call on the governments of Ukraine, Russia, neighboring countries, the United States, NATO, and the European Union, to explore all avenues—whether public or private—for a renewed conversation to address the human security needs of all the peoples and countries in the region, to help provide the basis for long term peace."
