A word from Jimmy Carter
It's not like RantWoman thought President Carter was the perfect president, but let us enjoy these words.

Homework for Christian Quakers: Jesus loves Trump. Deal With it or at least pray for his soul.
Judging by their twitter feed the person who emitted this Tweet is quite the Trumpling. Is he also a SECRET QUAKER? |
RantWoman is called to take a break from the hellfire aftermath on Maui, the supermarket tabloid level flood of more breathless #TrumpIndictment anticipation to...pray for Defendant Trump's soul!
So many factors contributed to #TFG turning into the horrible person he is today. So many people have enabled his worst instincts, and when people have tried to divert him from his worst ideas, he has been in no space to listen.
So pray for him. Don't let him anywhere near nuclear codes ever. Get him settled into a genteel retirement. House arrest at one of his properties would suit RantWoman just fine as long as #TFG doesn't try to grift the government for the cost of his incarceration, or space under strict mental health supervision if he were to be found incompetent to stand trial.
Pray for Donald Trump. Pray that he stops being able to hog all the broadcast airtime so that we can work on all the other problems facing our country.
And pray that there are LOTS of other people willing to pray for Mr. Trump who are not all nutball gun-worshipping cultists.
And by the way, pray that we can lose phrases like "basket of deplorables."
Peace out.
RantWoman.

Paper cranes of hope and memorial
This collection of links plus wearing a Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists T-shirt to a housing issues and disability event is all RantWoman will do this year to commemorate both Hiroshima day, August 6, and Nagasaki Day, August 9.

Update Quaker Call to Action
RantWoman is shamelessly reprinting the following email with minor edits to assist Friends in discerning individually and in our various corporate bodies about how we are called to bring Friends' presence to the current age.
RantWoman also expects to link this post as part of background in other posts
Quaker Call To Action ALERT |
The Urgent Call Steering Committee continues to hold our country’s challenging political environment in prayer. As we anticipate the 2024 election season, we have just issued an Updated Call To Action to the Religious Society of Friends. You can find it and download it here. The original Urgent Call continues to be a vital message. Please consider our updated pleas for action and distribute this email and Updated Call To Action widely for discernment by meetings and individual Friends. We are committed to continuing our work for truth and democracy through the 2024 elections. We will be organizing periodic National Zoom Calls for Friends to come together for encouragement, learning, and support. The first such call will be held on September 28, 2023, 7-9 pm EDT. We are thrilled that Parker Palmer will open this National Call with a message: "The Better Angels of Our Nature: Love, Truth, Justice & the Work of We the People." We will be sending you a flyer with more details soon. You can register for the September 28 National Zoom Call, as well as future calls and training sessions, on our website. Even though the polarization, promulgation of lies, and threats of violence that permeate our country’s public discourse are disheartening, and even frightening at times, let us continue to hold to our deep faith in the Light and to notice and affirm the Light wherever and whenever we see it. As Friends we nurture hope, trust, and joy through our worship and work together. Yours in faith, The Urgent Call Steering Committee Marian Beane, Bruce Birchard, Sam Caldwell, Gretchen Castle, Mary Ellen McNish, Diane Randall, Jim Waddington, and Michael Wajda, clerk. No religious dictator will save the world; no giant figure of heroic size will stalk across the stage of history today, as a new Messiah. But in simple, humble imperfect people like you and me wells up the springs of hope. --Thomas Kelly, The Eternal Promise, "Where Are the Springs of Hope?" 1939_ |

First pass reactions:
1. It's not all about the Presidential elections. Discuss.
2. When and how are we as Friends called to wade into difficult and contested territory with love and forthrightness?

Knock 'em dead, with cat and fighter planes.
Onyx and RantWoman |
We interrupt this age of #ClimateCatastrophe, hot tub temperature seawater, Raytheon marketing drone war proof of concept with autocratic lunatic on the side, gut-wrenching refugee and border stories, culture war fearmongering, and repetitive EX presidential indictments to offer....
a simple pet memorial.
To my adoring public--and anyone else who stumbles onto this post.
This has been sitting for a couple days and I am sharing it with various clumps of people in my life. One of the joys for me of online worship is getting to "meet" other people's creatures. Friends who have met me in Zoom worship may have met my cat Onyx.
I had to take Onyx to the vet on Wednesday. She did not come home.
I am probably still a couple nights sleep away from being able to talk much assuming I could even hear myself think over the #BlueAngels.
A short remembrance for my cat Onyx and special thanks to the cab driver who drove us to the vet because cultures and creatures and customers are sometimes an awkward combination.
I knew Onyx was at least 16. The vet she was 18. She has had the same vet since getting spayed after a bit of teenage motherhood and a stint with a weighty Friend before she came to me on an FGC-related catsit and stayed on to live with me.
The vet said sometimes older cats get hyperthyroidism and burn all their fat really quickly. Onyx could barely eat or drink and aside from reluctance about hundreds of dollars of tests, I could not face daily medication struggles even if there were medication that would help. So I let her go and also let her not come home in an urn. I feel okay about that because of many pictures.
Okay I still miss her meows when I come in the door but I am to the steps of giving away cat food and other cat things that she did not use anyway.
Onyx was totally my pandemic buddy.
Onyx made it clear sometimes when I wanted to cry and mope that she would not tolerate too much of that and needed me to hold it together. This was weirdly helpful.
Onyx sent all sorts of tail-twitching alerts when any of The Pigeon menace wanted to land on our window ledge.
Onyx was not nearly as adventurous as my previous cat. For instance, to my relief actually, she had absolutely no interest in strolls along the railing on our balcony 4 floors up from the patio.
At this point I am more or less okay, sometimes more, sometimes less, grateful for longtime companionship.
Thank you all for sharing this journey.
In Light and Faithfulness
(RantWoman)
PS, some snark via Twitter:
Yup. That Cat departed to other realms yesterday. No more kitty to collide with at home. Also no more kitty to commiserate with about the #BlueAngels roars.

Well-deserved snark about the #BlueAngels
