Microaggressions, mosquito bites, malaria, and a major anti-affirmative Supreme Court Ruling

RantWoman is trying to settle her soul, organize some chores that could be done while Zooming, and recalibrate a body clock destined to need to operate for several days at an hour before God herself is awake.

RantWoman is talking about the FGC Gathering, two national blind consumer organizations, and then NPYM Annual Session, calling us to build the beloved community.

Speaking of mosquitos, presenting Mosquito borne disease as national security threat
Beau of the Fifth column: could it be...climate change???

And speaking of mosquitos gone bananas, or at least as bananas as the Supreme Court can go in an affirmative action ruling, RantWoman is skipping multiple videos of doom and gloom and woe are we. That stuff is important

AND

NO ONE, not even plaintiffs in a lawsuit is guaranteed admission to Harvard

AND

Celebrate all the organizations that filed Friend of the Court briefs about the value of affirmative action

Go with that while RantWoman figures out whether she can and should say more in the No One is guaranteed admission to Harvard theme.

Videos of some reassurance and LOTS of uncertainty re Ukraine Russia mutiny coup

Videos with varying points of view and strands of reassurance.Definitely not up to the second about who is where, who is under arrest and / or dead.

Why Russia's nukes are probably secured for now.

(I am not crazy about the "arsenal of democracy" language but he sounds SO much better informed and speaks with much more nuance than other #GOP voices.)

Actual comment on the YouTube page:
THANK YOU Mr. Pence for going to Ukraine and for speaking in a well-informed way about many complexities. One of your most visible opponents is picking a fight with Mickey Mouse and with all the immigrants in his state. He is losing badly on both counts. I can't imagine expecting him to deal with Russia, let alone China or other bigger international issues.

Let's talk about more updates on Russia....

RantWoman is not nostalgic for late summer 1991. RantWoman remembers news streams coming off an old printer as Boris Eltsin rose to power.

RantWoman woke to news that Russia is shelling another Ukrainian city with a nuclear power plant.

By the end of the day, everyone was asking RantWoman "have you been watching the news?"

Until after the day's schedule, no.

The following are various news clips, presented as is with limited commentary except for one link that warns of disturbing images.

So sure, talk about brain injury, and meetings, and reasonable accommodations.

Once upon a time or more than one time or even dozens of times, RantWoman realized that in-person meetings were not going well for her, and in fact not going well differently after vision loss than before vision loss.

Nothing like quakerdom where meetings are a sacrament to collide with things that do not work.

No Visual feedback: RantWoman can't read anything written all over other people's faces.

People making decisions by nodding and grunting.

People sending things like minutes and statements to be discussed by email after RantWoman had already gotten on a bus to go to meetings.

Blaming RantWoman for all the problems. (RantWoman thanks one Friend for acknowledging that some pieces were tough for everyone, not just RantWoman.)

RantWoman, optimistic that illustrating the problem in other contexts than Meeting offered Friends MULTIPLE invitations to come to different meetings where most people were blind. FINALLY, after literally YEARS of such invitations, RantWoman enticed two members of the community to come to different blind person events.

Both came back with extremely topical observations.

One Friend completely blew their own insight out of the water, though.

How?

"Yes, I see... AND I DON'T SEE (pun NOT intended) how this has anything to do with Meeting for Business.

RantWoman's excessively plain English to Quakerese badly short circuited into stunned silence.

Now RantWoman can manage to say, "Friend, have you considered that YOU NOT SEEING .. and therefore not being willing to try might be part of the problem????

Zoom has changed the dynamics of many meetings.

It's HIGH time to revisit the RantWoman in meetings issue and RantWoman means to take initiative AHEAD of one upcoming event.

Enter the world of Twitter and sort of kind of hidden disability in the realms of brain injury, stroke.

Speaking of brain injury, RantWoman has not tweeted back that, well, it's obvious to RantWoman that the two people Rep. Boebert was tweeting about knew better what they meant to say than a certain former White House occupant and flagrant disseminator of word salad.

Luckily, Divine Mercy has spared RantWoman any need ever to be in meetings with Ex President and Groper in Chief Word Salad Master. (For anyone interested, #DisabilityTwitter has pretty piquant things to say about Ex President Word Salad Master on multiple grounds. That is a topic for another day.)

RantWoman has however been in many meetings with people who may or may not announce that they have brain injury. One person says people read her as drunk sometimes. Another makes different mistakes in English than other native speakers of his mother tongue. Bells are ringing in RantWoman's head about not one but TWO additional situations.

Here we come to more conceptual minefields lurking in community conversations.

Once upon a time, RantWoman, still not forgetting lapses in a recent survey about disability wishes to bring up the term "reasonable accommodations."

"Reasonable accommodations" is language highly relevant in many situations where people need to speak both of their own disability and of adjustments about process, practices, facilities to allow people to fully participate. Cue the question "What reasonable accommodations are helpful...?"

"Reasonable accommodations" is language from the Americans with Disability Act. In many situations it yields more practical and actionable steps than lots of mushy rhetoric about "disability justice."

There is a problem. Probably more than one problem: even if people need the same accommodations at work where maybe they are swirling in trendy DEI JEDI, choose your favorite acronym for "Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion" and at school and at faith communities where people aspire to live by a "single standard of truth," faith communities cleverly got themselves exempted from the ADA.

But WAIT. The Americans with Disabilities Act is not the only legislation relevant to the conversation. Many states, including WA have their own further non-discrimination civil rights statutes. One important aspect of the WA non-discrimination statute, RCW 49.60 is that, unlike the ADA, religious organizations are also defined as public accommodations, where anti-discrimination efforts are on point.

RantWoman is clear to hammer on this point in terms of continuing revelation, not allowing misapprehensions to persist. (The actual legal venue to hash this out would be the WA Civil Rights Commission. RantWoman, for a number of reasons is clear that the Civil Rights commission would be less helpful than asking  Friends to start where we are.)

In RantWoman's corner of the Quaker universe, this mental gap extends even further. A Care and Accountability Committee FOR A PERSON WITH A DISABILITY asserted that their task had nothing to do with disability.

And then a whole survey got done and although RantWoman was permitted input into the survey, RantWoman was also RELEASED FROM MEMBERSHIP before the survey was implemented.

And although disability  or matters of physical accessibility still crept into some community conversations, RantWoman still has a sense of worshipping silence!

And Quarterly Meeting Ministry and Counsel decided OVER AND OVER that somehow RantWoman was out of their purview. One Friend basically said "we don't want to take up the issue..." Not WANT TO is not the point! Probably no one WANTS to take up mid-life vision loss or ... or...When Quarterly Meeting finallygot around to creating a committee on disabilities, they decided it should be a committee ONLY about matters of disability AT Quarterly Meeting.

RantWoman is muddling all of this as she registers to attend NPYM annual session virtually. RantWoman was able to register fine, partly because she is technologically versatile. But on the way RantWoman hit so many emotional minefields, she decided she HAS OPINIONS and asked for a member of Ministry and Counsel to please reach out.

In the meantime, RantWoman will go back to the joys and pains of wordsmithing under Roberts Rules of Order with a bunch of very motivated blind people who are all clear a certain national organization needs not only to invite itself to a party but to demand that the organization throwing the party invite a bunch of other people too.

Yes, RantWoman used the word "party' seasoned by snark: the party is about creating a credential requested by one category of medical provider who know they have a problem. RantWoman is clear that organizations inviting themselves to the party is a much better idea than just demanding a full stop.

And when RantWoman unwinds from that, there is also fretting about Putin shelling anothe city with a nuclear power plant and live stream about whatever Action is breaking out. RantWoman is PRAYING for sense to take over but so far...

Is TFG competent to stand trial????

RantWoman has in fact been praying over the ongoing national meltdown. RantWoman has particularly been holding the illustrious #POTUS45, The Former Guy and all his legal entanglements. TFG keeps setting new world records in not especially glorious categories:

--Only president to have been impeached twice.

--Only President to have been arrested more times than he won even the electoral vote, never mind losing the popular vote.

--most indictments ever for a former president.

RantWoman realizes she may be getting ahead of legal processes here but Thoughts Come to Mind .
Should TFG go to prison?

Should TFG get sent permanently into exile?

Should TFG lose all pension and secret service protection???

Should TFG be pardoned, or worse yet pardoned BY A DEMOCRAT?

Here is such light as comes to RantWoman, hopefully at least slightly adjusted by a sarcasm and snark filter.

Unauthorized. Illegal. Dangerous....

So far the details of the indictment of EX President Trump are beginning to sink in for his Attorney General, and Secretary of Defense and a whole string of other people.

Let's not talk about "Document 19" and the Department of Energy classification system.

Let's not talk about levels of classification so high they have to be blurred out in indictment photos.

Let's not talk about stacks of boxes in a storage room with a photocopier...

Let's not talk about 130,000 people coming and going from a beach resort over the course of a year.

And we have not even gotten to the iceberg of the #January6 coup plot, violent insurrection, and multistate attempts to overturn an election.

Today clips of TFG's interview with FOX News last night are all over all the places. Here is one example.

RantWoman's thoughts, which may or may not delight prison abolitionists:

TFG is DELUSIONAL. He is so delusional he really cannot participate in his own defense. Because of all the things he knows as a former president, he is both an ongoing national security threat and should be declared incompetent to stand trial. However BECAUSE he is an ongoing National Security Threat:

1. Aside from the legal ups and downs of proving a criminal case and the practicalities of a former president in prison TFG in prison sounds like a bad idea. Prison is a place where lots of people learn more and better criming. IMAGINE what TFG has to teach.

2. TFG knows too much and should never be without Secret Service protection, both for his safety and for the safety of the country.

3. He should never be allowed to leave the country because of the he knows to much issue and because he would probably, left to his own devices, get right to work trying to trade on MORE secrets.

So what's left?

If TFG is found incompetent to stand trial and agrees to be interviewed by investigators whenever asked he could be remanded to permanent house arrest at one of his properties. Strict controls on who comes and goes. NO access to social media, as in anything he tries to post gets routed to some kind of investigative file and not disseminated.

Full disclosure: RantWoman is neither a lawyer nor a mental health professional. Because of academic background RantWoman has been in the vicinity of various kinds of information relevant to the national security state. So RantWoman is not merely grabbing batso ideas out of thin air.

There are numerous legal issues some eager lawyer MAY still be interested in litigating, but the point is to contain and begin to address enormous damage to US national security.

RantWoman considers a pardon completely inappropriate.

HOWEVER, RantWoman suggests the country might also invoke the Ben Pink Dandelion principle that sometimes having someone REALLY BAD AT A CERTAIN ROLE can help everyone appreciate when things are done well.

Probably the rest of us also need to get busy about ways o ensure things get done better going forward too.

Happy Father's Day in memory of RantDad

RantDad, how shall we remember thee this year?

I know: find every bassoon recital, woodwind studio arrangement, bassoon ensemble cover of music written for other instruments, and general low register shorts on Youtube and play us out for the night for awhile.

Enjoy the music.

Read on as led.

But RantWoman, RantDad was much more than that.

Yeah.

And not all of it needs to be said right here, right now. Instead:

Johan Maurer on Grace and tangentially on God the father with a bunch of other stuff thrown in

RantWoman would not say RantDad articulated any sense of divine grace until late in his life. Maybe growing up with the Righteous Rev. Rant Grandad for a father had something to do with it. RantWoman is glad it finally came. RantWoman would not have minded if some more nuanced self-reflection also came along too, but at a certain point one gets to appreciate gifts and realize one is trying to paddle a different canoe.

Blecch, RantWoman, why Josh Hawley.

1. From a sense of gratitude: thank GOD in all forms of heaven that RantDad never tried to overthrow a government or put on a muscle shirt and preach whatever version of the Bible that Sen. Hawley needs to burble.

2. Because RantWoman really hopes one of the Hawley children is going to ask their father questions like "Daddy, what was that fist pumping on January 6 all about?" OR "Daddy, why are you such a jerk about questioning that lady in the Congressional hearing?" Okay, first, RantWoman has to hope one of the Hawley children will be the sort of fearless mind that leads people to ask questions like that.

3. RantWoman needs some place to store this collection of media bits. No, RantWoman is not going to buy the book and RantWoman wouldn't mind if the items here put others off any temptation to buy the book.RantWoman is going to try to come at some gender topics with more nuance than "HELL NO, Josh Hawley's vision of manhood is sui generis, NOT something to be generalized.

The late night comedy writers are still on strike and yet comic material persists.

Today, June 13, marked a solemn occasion. FORMER President TFG has now been arraigned for the second time, two more times than he he won the popular vote and 1 more time than he won the electoral vote.

It is indeed a solemn enough occasion to take the day off from war and mayhem in Ukraine and Russia.

It is still not solemn enough to suppress possibly inappropriate chuckles.

Random moments that have made RantWoman laugh.

And for background

Finally, the illustrious Lauren Boebert, R #CO03 spent her daily Twitter

1. Complaining about something to do with a half naked transwoman's "sillicon" breasts as seen on the White House lawn (Meh! RantWoman is all about body-positivity but probably would recommend a different venue for full display.)

2. Filing articles of impeachment against Joe Biden for something to do with classified documents found in his garage and immediately returned. RantWoman is not up on how many other times someone in the @HouseGOP caucus may have filed articles of impeachment against President Biden.

HOWEVER, RantWoman is reminded of all the commentators at the onset of the Trump regime basically acting like "why hasn't this guy been impeached already?"  If Biden has been in office this long and someone is only now getting around to impeaching him, whether I agree or not, what is taking them so long?

RantWoman promises further rants HOPEFULLY motivating all her readers to pick an avenue for electoral engagement and get on it and DO NOT WAIT until 2024.

In the meantime, pray for the soul of the country and grab chuckles wherever they are found.

Lawrence Odonell and Mary Trump talk TFG and jail

RantWoman posted the following comment for consideration.

Hear me out here.

TFG should NEVER be anywhere near the nuclear codes ever under any circumstances. I do not care whether he goes to jail. I just want him securely detained with no capacity to flee the country.

Can anyone make an insanity not fit to stand trial defense? Invoke the 14th and 25th amendments. Declare him ineligible to be President.

Clearly sometimes he knows right from wrong. Other times he contradicts something that millions of people around the world have heard him say on tape. He can't keep his mouth shut so he's a danger to himself and not able to participate in his own defense. I don't know what anyone calls threatening nuclear war on Twitter or all his comments luring people into January 6 and then not backing them up, but "a danger to others" comes to mind for me.

Because TFG cannot participate in his own defense he also keeps burning through lawyers and he is having more and more trouble finding new ones.

SO

What about a court-appointed public defender. Find an attorney with at least some security clearance. The court negotiates an hourly fee, puts a lien on a Trump property to ensure that it gets repaid and then TFG has enough representation to ensure due process.

Probably it will take some sleuthing to find a property where a lien will stick. The cost of that sleuthing also goes on the tab.

I know this is pretty out of the box and I am not an attorney. This also won't help deprogram the Trump Cult. I also have no security clearance but I bet someone could make the case that damage TFG has done to US national security is close to that done by Robert Hansen, the spy who just died. Contain TFG. DO NOT PARDON HIM and concentrate on cleaning up the messes he made.

You know the war is going badly when ...

1. Iran wants to repo drones Russia has not paid for,

2. 18,000 troops surrender in one day. Many times numbers cited by all sides are wild exaggerations. RantWoman has not cross-checked to see whether this number holds up from multiple sources. RantWoman does generally credit the commentary about the sequence of events described in the video.

5. Before Russia invaded Ukraine, it was supposed to have the second best military in the world. Now, Twitter quips that Russia has the second best army in Ukraine.

RantWoman is also trying to find the Quincy Institute citation noting that most US commentators on channels like CNN and MSNBC are either retired military or have some connection to defense contractors.

RantWoman would say that international channels also at times sound frankly like marketing videos for various weapons systems. However, international channels sometimes do a better job of talking about complexities such as history and domestic politics inside Russia.

Two points are clear to RantWoman based on these videos:

--The war in Ukraine is explicitly about demonstrating what different categories of drones  and "nimble" tactics.

--Several countries are shipping off to Ukraine a lot of old Soviet era military equipment. In many cases Ukrainians already know how to operate some of this equipment. In many more cases, RantWoman gets a definite sense that people are glad to use up older equipment so they have good excuses to upgrade and buy / sell more modern products.

A short summary of this ragged compilation:

--Arms sales are making RantWoman cringe but seem critical here.

--Whatever solution brokered from the outside needs to be a multilateral solution.

--Post-war civil society in Russia is going to be no picnic.

Enough for now.
