October 1 World Quaker Day Events around the world

Sunday October 1 is World Quaker Day.

RantWoman is not sure how the practice evolved but here is a link from the
Friends World Committee on Consultation about a number of different
events happening around the world. RantWoman will probably pick just one or
two depending on timing.

https://fwcc.world/worldquakerday/

There are signup links and times are UTC so some events will begin
Saturday evening Seattle time.

RantWoman always finds it really interesting to hear what is important to Quakers in different parts of the world.

On the way to retirement, General Mark Milley excoriates the former Commander in Chief plus other related items.

RantWoman, you're a QUAKER. Why you gotta post all this stuff about military matters?

1. God in his / her wisdom, colossal sense of irony landed RantWoman in an interdisciplinary area studies MA program studying alongside what the military calls Foreign Area Officers.

2. As General Milley says below, the relation between the military and the rest of government is unique in the US and whether we are going to take care of our Constution or want to adjust certain provisions, we need to understand and respect that. In furtherance of this goal, RantWoman desparately wishes all states would add minimal standards of basic civics knowledge as conditions for running for public office.

3. RantWoman, after she finishes her own commentary will include a recent video from Jake Broe about Russia and Ukraine. The first 17 minutes or so are pretty usually reporting about Russia doing war very badly. This is followed by the Estonian prime minister talking about life under Soviet rule. This is followed by a clip of some elderly Russians who probably are no threat militarily but do want to reclaim Alaska and rescue it from fascism. Forgive RantWoman: if you're going to do it right, why stop at Alaska. RantWoman is cautious about throwing around the word fascism, but RantWoman can definitely think of some figures she would be happy to be liberated from. RantWoman is not sure the patriotic elderly Russians in the video would be the ones to do it though.

Now, let us start with General Mark Milley retiring, releasing a book that WILL go on RantWoman's mean to read list, and excoriating his former Commander in Chief on entirely reasonable grounds.

Anyone remember early in the reign of now #P01135809 when somehow the President threatening North Korea with nuclear war did not violate Twitter's content guidelines? In that context, imagine if you are a foreign leader hearing all the internet chatter leading up to the #January6 insurrection. Part of peacemaking in that interval: General Milley picked up the phone and called his counterpart in China. Gen. Milley also explicitly and individualy checked that everyone immediately under him would resist illegal orders coming from the President. In other words, General Milley is one of the figures who absolutely did the right thing as #J6 unfolded and leading up to it.

Now please enjoy some videos.

Headline is the understatement of the year.

Sen. Tuberville (R AL) and confirmation
On a tangentially related note, RantWoman does not know whether to pray for an opportunity to offer Sen. Tommy Tuberville R, AL a piece of her mind to his face OR to pray that she is never offered the temptation.

First, a word of gratitude for the US Senate moving at least Gen. Brown's nomination to replace Gen. Milley as head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff past the hold that Sen. Tuberville has placed on military promotions in furtherance of his allegedly "prolife" tunnel vision.

RantWoman apologizes for not grabbing links to the clips but here are some low points recently from Sen. Tuberville.

Senator Tuberville probably rose to football coach greatness on the backs of predominatly players of color. This did not stop him in context of the military confirmation holds, from making one racist implication after another that African American troops just aren't as good as white ones and that frank Nazis are just patriotic Americans. Apparently Sen. Tuberville has not considered the degree to which people of color are overrepresented in the US all volunteer military.

In any case, RantWoman wants to express gratitude that Sen. Tuberville, who has never served in the military, got SOUNDLY spanked by Sen. Mark Kelly on behalf of several veterans, some who have seen combat about Tuberville's impact on readiness and the military's ability to do what asked.

Republicans Dysfunctionally trying to do debate

The comedy writers have settled their strike and YouTube promises RantWoman that several favorite voices will be Back On Monday.

In the meantime RantWoman has been ambivalently drawing comedic sustenance from the # GOPDebates wing of the #GOPClownShow. Warning. RantWoman's idea of comedic sustenance is both  snarky and sarcastic, and RantWoman herself does not believe every bad idea that wanders through her head.

This video is not the best example RantWoman has seen but RantWoman recommends the Dollemore Daily for various flavors of congenial invective. RantWoman has also courteously provided multiple links to other commentary and YouTube will generously provide other items.

LOTS of interesting comments but for cripes sake mike the room better

Christie's comment is just DUMB for any party claiming to be about family values. Pence's response was touching but didn't quite land as needed.
RantWoman agrees about a lot of the "didn't talk about" items
Why yes, WHERE IS THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY in the MAGA leadership states?
"wardens of the internet gulag"

No we should NOT cancel future debates and people need to be STRONG against #POTUS45
reports a polss (from where) that 80% of voters in IA and NH would consider someone else besides #DonaldDump

In further RantWoman commentary:

Teachers?!?!? Guys?!?!?
RantWoman has no clue which strands of #GOP #MAGA crazy Gov. Christie is trying to feed raw meat to, but whatever he might have been trying to say, possibly about school choice, just came out as ICK. Much as the world likes to rag on Mike Pence, RantWoman is glad to know he is happily married. RantWoman also has NO CLUE why the information would be helpful in the debate.

Immigration:
Vivek, you're just nuts and WRONG: no we should NOT revoke birthright citizenship for ANYONE, not even children of parents who came to the US illegally.

HOWEVER, if anyone wants to worry about immigration, RantWoman wonders whether someone would pull a Donald Trump on both Vivek and Nikki Haley: demand to see their birth certificates because how could there possibly be people of color running for p p p President.

And speaking of people of color. OMG. There are TWO people of color in the debate from South Carolina. Does that mean that racism is over OR that at least someone is embracing the point that the US is, whether people want or not, becoming majority non-white.

Nikki vs Vivek:
Vivek comes off as a total tech-bro, with a bunch of dogmatic WRONG ideas that, RantWoman is pretty sure, will have ZERO appeal to younger people he is trying to reach. Nikki vs Vivek comes across a little bit as South Asian gender issues grudge match, but RantWoman is just fine with a woman of similar background coming after him with his attitudes.

North Dakota???
Good for the governor of North Dakota for even showing up. Better of course if RantWoman would figure out his name but big sparsely populated mineral rich states definitely need a voice.

RantWoman couldn't have stomached the whole debate and is not commenting on foreign policy or economy issues, but RantWoman is VERY happy to offer some questions she wishes SOMEONE would start to ask.

--Y'all are tiptoeing around about #DonaldDuck (RantWoman LOVES that name) but he over and over proposes activities that to put it mildly do not reflect Constitutional thinking. What can you say to reassure voters that you will actually strive to fulfill your oath of office?

--What can you say to primary voters swept up in The Former Guy's anti-constitutional nonsense to reassure then that we can all live together AND respect the Constitution?

--What would you do to address rates of child poverty up dramatically since the Child tax Credit went away?

--What would you do to address the appalling level of gun violence in the US?

--The federal minimum wage is stuck at the same level as in the 1990's. What would you do to ensure a living wage for everyone in the US?

--Go around: Suggest one question you think we should be asking and let's hear your answer and also your competitors.

There. RantWoman deeply hopes the next debate will have more substance, fewer theatrics, and maybe less need for boxing gloves.

Fashion!

Give us this day, with our morning public radio and bowl of oatmeal, our...Daily Reason to Rant

Today's nugget which may or may not evoke pearls of wisdom: Mr. EX President should take fashion advice from RantWoman. Hang in with the reasoning!

There is a Rolling Stone article claiming that FORMER President Gropesaurus is starting to worry about being sent to prison, what clothing he might be forced to wear, and whether Congress might revoke his lifetime Secret Service protection.

RantWoman HOPES the questions are as vexatious to ardent prison abolitionists as they are to RantWoman.

RantWoman believes both that the former occupant of the White House deserves substantial punishment and that preserving her own sense of humanity requires note of MANY circumstances which have turned him into the horrible creepy disgusting man-child he is today: a whole river of factors from parental emotional and physical abuse and neglect to decades and scores of enablers.

RantWoman believes there must be some path to spiritual transformation and freely admits she has no idea what that might look like.

For now, the here and now.

A good percentage of the replies to questions arising from the Rolling Stone article in RantWoman's Twitter / X feed are ready to revoke Secret Service protection and fit The Former Guy for an orange jumpsuit, possibly at Gitmo. Never mind whether Georgia might be first in line for housing our national Presidential embarrassment and then perhaps have the option of allowing the defendant to serve his Georgia time in federal prison.

At least Gitmo would be climatically similar to south FL, which is more than could be said for say the federal Supermax prison in CO, known lately for housing one of the most damaging spies for Russia in US history. Reference to spies is not accidental considering some details of the documents case at Mar a Lago, though the worst details of possible transactions may never make it to court.

But RantWoman is getting ahead of herself.

RantWoman is happy to admit, she finds all of Mr. EX President's legal travails fascinating, better than soap operas, sometimes more titillating than the National Enquirer, and of course HUGELY consequential for the US and for democracy. RantWoman also is a little afraid that somehow despite all of what appears to the commentators RantWoman watches to be ironclad blistering evidence of criminal culpability that all of the court cases might wind up with some kind of bizarre out of Q field result comparable to the acquittal of OJ Simpson.

Whatever happens to legal cases, RantWoman thinks it would be a bad idea to revoke Secret Service protection for Mr. Gropesaurus. Maintaining Secret Service protection is as much protecting the US as it is protecting the person of the former president. IF anything, Mr. Propesaurus should be expected to tighten up security wherever he winds up.

RantWoman also notes that Mr. EX President practically wipes his butt with the Constitution at least daily and some times several times an hour. He is as responsible for the single biggest one-day violent crime wave in the US since 9/11. He keeps confessing to malevolent narcissistic intent all over whatever media channel  puts microphones in front of his face. There is NO WAY anyone should expect that he will be able or willing to comply with his oath of office any better a second time around than the first time.

In fact, RantWoman keeps wondering why no one has ordered a mental health evaluation to determine his fitness to stand trial and hence his fitness to serve as President.

That said, RantWoman thinks it is fine, just FINE if the real possibility of going to prison MAY be starting to sink in for Mr. EX President. The country has real problems. Everyone needs a break from endless replays of mugshots. Mr. Gropesaurus needs a break. Whatever revolution QAnon or whoever wants to wrack is going to need more than one miserable narcissist to carry out.

So...time to seriously consider a plea deal.

RantWoman is a lot less interested in fitting Mr. Orange with clothing that matches his spray on skin tone than in ensuring that the guy never ever sets foot in the Oval Office again.

RantWoman would let lawyers work out details as long as any deal comes with all of the following:

--Lengthy and substantial limits on Mr. EX President's liberty, for instance home detention at one of his US properties, surrendering his passports

--Stipulation that he is never again eligible to become President.

--Internet and social media access ONLY for content cleared by a court-appointed representative which The Former Guy pays for

In return for sparing the country outrageous trial spectacle, Mr. Gropesaurus could be offered:

--Home confinement as long as he pays the costs of all security measures.

--The opportunity to maintain his preferred diet including level of ketchup consumption

--And the biggest thing: the opportunity to continue to make his own, sometimes regretable, fashion choices!

RantWoman HAS OPINIONS about things that might help pull the rest of the country back from the brink of a political abyss. These opinions get their own post.

PS. Hell YES, this IS election interference. It's also a call to both parties to do a MUCH better job of vetting candidates.

Oh, and RantWoman hopes states keeping working on ways to keep. Mr. EX President Gropesaurus off the ballot just in case.

Support Indian American Community Services petition regarding police accountability and the death of Jaahnavi Kandula

#JaahnaviKandula #JusticeForJaahanavi

The following is a invitation from the Indian American Community Services both to sign on to their statement regarding the police killing of Jaahnavi Kandula and to sign a petition at Change.org

To RantWoman listening to the voice of the Indian American community and respecting their formulation of concerns is NO BRAINER ally anti-racism, especially also considering the statement  on their website about #BlackLivesMatter.

The link to the Change.org petition is within this statement.

Key asks

the IACS and its partners seek the following from the City of Seattle and Seattle Police Department:

  1. Creation of an independent body to investigate Jaahnavi Kandula’s and other civilian deaths involving SPD officers, and report results back to the community in a timely manner.
  2. Identification and disclosure all details of the fatal accident to the public including the high speed at which Officer Kevin Dave was driving. Provide clarity on what basis Officer Auderer had already determined that it was not reckless driving that fatally killed Ms. Kandula.
  3. Release all of investigative reports from the Office of Police Accountability regarding this case to the public, providing full transparency.
  4. Accountability for the three officers involved in the death of Ms. Kandula and subsequent events:
    1. Officer Kevin Dave who struck Ms. Kandula, resulting in her death.
    2. Officer Daniel Auderer,  vice president of SPOG, who laughed about the deadly crash, dismissed any implication of responsibility or criminality, and demeaned Ms. Kandula’s life to be of  “limited value.”
    3. Officer Mike Solan, president of SPOG, who callously engaged in this horrific conversation with Officer Daniel Auderer.

Organizations supporting this petition include:

  • Indian American Community Services (IACS)
  • Asian Counseling Referral Service (ACRS)
  • Asia Pacific Islander Coalition (APIC) Seattle
  • Asia Pacific Islander Coalition (APIC) East King County
  • Eastside For All
  • Indo-American Friendship Forum (IAFF)
  • Japanese American Citizens League (JACL)
  • Pacific Islander Health Board of WA State

  • Asian Pacific Islander Coalition of Yakima
  • Periyar Ambedkar study circle

A couple additional RantWoman comments.

--Jaahnavi Kandula's death is one of far too many car vs. pedestrian accidents in Seattle. Car vs Pedestrian accidents are increasing nationwide. Some of the factors common to many of them include:

     Poor pedestrian infrastructure

     High speed

SUV's are more deadly than other vehicles and large vehicles are an increasing percentage of all road traffic.

--RantWoman hopes that Jaahnavi's family has connected with an appropriate lawyer for the situation

--Initially, one of the pain points for the public was the delay in announcing that the person struck by the police vehicle had died. NO ONE anywhere on the planet wants to find out a loved one has died from the internet. RantWoman hopes the police handled notifications sensitively.

--RantWoman is seasoning a whole separate rant about black humor. RantWoman does find it hard to swallow the police department's claim that they were joking about how lawyers present cases because, drum roll please, the Seattle Police Officers Guild has spent decades getting help from lawyers to avoid transparency and accountability.

--The other point about black humor has to do with job stress, community stress, and more that needs to be said but not necessarily here.

One of the better videos RantWoman has seen

One of the most concise and focused articulations RantWoman has seen of circumstances related to the January incident where a police SUV driving at a very high rate of speed mowed down a pedestrian crosswalk. Also comments that speak to RantWoman about police reform.

For Jaahnavi and not only

As a wholesome break from the news swamp of wars, political campaigns, indictments, melting sea ice endangering penguins, RantWoman and Ambassador Thwack decided to embrace sunshine and head out to a memorial vigil and #JusticeForJaahnavi march for police accountability.

First the parts RantWoman opted not to say on her other blog about today's vigil in memory of #JaahnaviKandula and calling for real police accountability.

What do we want?

Bargain Basement two for the price of one propagandists: ALEX JONES CRIES ON RUSSIAN TV w/ Vladimir Solovyov

CONTENT WARNING: It's propaganda. It's pretty GROSS

A little will go a LONG way. Enter with caution.

RantWoman has previously only interacted with Alex Jones in tiny increments and by accident: any greater exposure would make RantWoman's head explode.

Vladimir Solovyov is in some respects a Russian version of Alex Jones, hot-headed, vituperative, not well-connected with either reality or the norms of genteel debate.

In other words, Alex and Vlad are brothers from different mothers. RantWoman offers readers a small sampling of parallel brainwashing, with thanks to @Roman_NFKRZ for the running commentary and a bit of audio description at the end.

A few random notes:

Honestly, as appalling as the conversation is, Solovyov is even more intemperate and outrageous with Russian guests.

RantWoman had not expected Solovyov to speak English at all, let alone with what Russians call "American phonetics." Turns out, according to Wikipedia  Solovyov not only studied English in school, in the 1990's he taught economics for a time at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

Duly Noted: "The Other 9/11": Ariel Dorfman on 50th Anniversary of U.S.-Backed Coup ...

RantWoman cannot comment in great depth but does remember the fashion as the Soviet Union was falling apart and seeking to refashion its economy: Pinochet was a great hero and role model for one strand of thought.

RantWoman is also not sufficient student of contemporary Chilean politics for in-depth analysis but is generally heartened to think that democracy has again found its footing.

Anyway, noted for history.

Happy (?)  #September11 with prayers and ripples of both trauma and caring

Happy reason the US went to Iraq looking for weapons of mass destruction

Happy reason for the US 20-year entanglement in Afghanistan.

Happy single biggest one-day violent crime wave in the US maybe since the Civil War. Happy shitty comparison with the second biggest one-day violent crime wave in the US, #Jamuary6, on RantTWoman's mind for many reasons including presidential indictments and ongoing arrests of #J6 terrorists / rioters and hapless tagalongs.

Yeah, but maybe don't lose contact with the day of.

Pastors, conspiracy theories and the "pastor" who tried to "help" Ruby Freeman

RantWoman does not consider herself good at vote support BASICS like vote registration and Get out the Vote efforts. RantWoman is trying to discern whether that is a path she is called to.

RantWoman is deeply humbled by all the people who have to directly fight vote suppression and voter disenfranchisement.

But first, for people who still have not read the GA election fraud indictment, a couple vids about the creepy religious angle, THANK GOD with body cam evidence!

Jake Broe
High points:
--NATO interprets the drone fragment in Romania as an accident
--New Ukrainian defense minister on Crimea
--Russia has penetrated some of the defensive trench network.
--Mindless Russian bombing of apartment in Donetsk in honor (?) of Blinken visit
--Blinken and Kuleba go to McDonalds. Yeah international business confidence in Ukraine

background; didn't watch all of it.

RICO in GA and the poor #J6 crowd

RantWoman is watching all the legal ins and outs involving Mr. #P01135809 with morbid fascination. RantWoman lives in fear of some OJ Simpson like outcome. RantWoman also wishes someone with more mental health credentials than she has would declare #TFG so delusional, such a threat to himself and others, so incapable of effectively participating in his own defense that he needs to be involuntarily confined in some mental health facility.

That said, for variety, RantWoman is also watching sentencing both for the #J6 ground troops and for peons who "just" did things like participate in the nightmarish confrontations in the west tunnel of the US Capitol, generally always just peaceful tourism (NOT!)

RantWoman has a good deal of tiresome what about ism referring to #BLM in her social media feeds.

AND this week, add

Democracy Now reporting on the new indictments and the context of continuing work against Cop City

Rant posted in the comments:

Speaking of two-tier justice:

Does Sarah Palin or anyone yammering about how the #J6 protestors are being persecuted have any idea how many MORE privileges the #J6 crowd in the DC jail than average other people there?

And we won't even discuss the Atlanta Rice St. Jail.

As for proportionate punishment, poor insurrectionists. Their conduct is so far beyond the pale of most protests on the Left. Just don't even...

Are y'all in a position to talk about the latest Stop Cop City RICO indictments just handed down in GA. People are being charged under the GA RICO law for handing out flyers. I have serious issues with throwing projectiles at police and some of the other crap I know goes on so there needs to be sensible media coverage, but COME ON #J6Insurrectionists, THINK about your actions.

RantWoman is just going to let readers' reflections on all this marinate. Expect RantWoman to have more to say coming soon.

Bad Friend Rental Ad: Yeah Walkscore...and...

The following may or may not refer to any actual property for rent from a community still bizarrely dear to RantWoman's heart.

The property for rent IS in better condition than the snapshot at this bus shelter.

Bus shelter missing glass and light on the grafitti
Sometimes this bus shelter
has glass on 3 sides.
Sometimes it gets caked in graffiti.
Mercifully the bench is permanent
Probably RantWoman should not quit all her other transit and walkability agitation and write copy for this situation, but here is the copy that came to mind when RantWoman received the actual notice.

Very earnest, sincere, and persistently ableist University District faith community who have kicked many property stewardship decisions down the road for many years now desperately hopes that there is a community organization that does not care about physical accessibility and is willing to assist about monthly cash flow issues by renting two upper floors of a building with LOTS of stairs and ZERO wheelchair accessibility.

5 Bedrooms
2 full baths
Laundry onsite
Parking onsite
Walk score: astronomical

RantWoman can in fact imagine some circumstances the building would be ideal for but since suggestions from RantWoman AND some other members of the community have been ignored for a very long time, RantWoman is not inclined to play matchmaker.

Great new sidewalk. Silly placement of No Parking sign
No Parking sign
Note extremely pedestrian UNfriendly
placement mid-sidewalk

Please note: RantWoman generally strongly approves of real estate listings that talk about Walk Score.

If RantWoman were to delve into more depth about what information goes into walk score, though, RantWoman is pretty sure the result would be lower.

The property is close to MANY forms of public transportation.

There are a variety of issues with sidewalk and sidewalk discontinuities, partly due to construction in the neighborhood, and partly due to proximity to the ship canal bridge.

Readers interested in the property can find the actual ad on Zillow.

The other Atlanta indictments: Stop cop city

RantWoman's morning Twitter / X feed included news that a total of 61 people have been indicted in Atlanta under the GA version of RICO, the Racketeer and Corrupt Organization law, the same law responsible for the 19-person indictment involving the EX president.

For first pass RantWoman is collecting some media links below.

RantWoman has VERY strong opinions about nonviolence, two-tier justice, criminalizing dissent, comparability of offenses, what-aboutism and assorted other topics RantWoman can easily make relevant. Partly because of other legal matters already in progress, RantWoman will for now defer comment.

But let's start with media links

Genetic science and a deceased sea mammal Montana Man Holds America's Oldest DNA

This post is dedicating to everyone grieving the captivity and recent death of Tokatai, the orca matriarch who lived most of her life in SeaWorld in FL and died unexpectedly before she could be brought back to the Puget Sound in hopes that she would have a chance to hear the calls of her pod before she died.

Yes, of COURSE it's weird to dedicate a post about how DNA testing suggests ancient migration patterns to a deceased sea mammal. RantWoman understands that some members of native communities are upset that Tokatai's body is destined for science and not for immediate culturally appropriate burial.

RantWoman hopes this post suggests openings to find connections lots of different ways.

Not Crazy about political parties: The Movement Voter Project can help you direct dollars straight to powerful grassroots work

RantWoman tends to like to invest support for democracy in specific directions instead of political parties.

MVP friends,

This month’s newsletter is about hope.

Not blind optimism, but clear-eyed hope for what is possible – and the progress already happening at the state level (see below).

As you read this, there are hundreds of locally-based grassroots organizations working tirelessly, humbly, under the radar across the country, who hold the key to saving our democracy and our planet.

Next year could be rife with political chaos. Trump’s support has only grown as his criminal trials pile up, which he could use to incite civil breakdown during the Republican primaries.

At the global level, the UN recently warned that the era of “Global Boiling” will only get worse if we don’t fix it. And the only way to fix it is to invest in 2023 like our lives depend on it, win big in 2024, and enact transformational policies in 2025.

Yes, the situation is dire — but it is not too late.

The future we want is possible. The stories below show us the path.

This is NOT a real headline — but it COULD be on November 5, 2024, if we invest like we mean it.

In This Newsletter:
  1. Stories from the States: Organizing + Elections = Progress!
  2. Arizona: Advancing the Agenda for Progressive Power
  3. Ohio: We Won! A Victory for Democracy & Abortion Rights
  4. Michigan: More Fair Maps = More Progressive Breakthroughs
  5. The Big Picture: How Do We Build a Durable Progressive Majority?

* Warning: Do not read this if you wish to remain hopeless, cynical, or convinced that we can’t make a difference!

STORIES FROM THE STATES

Organizing + Elections = Progress!

Remember when 2022 was supposed to be a Red Wave? MVP partners defied the odds. Now, we’re seeing the fruits of their labor… and they’re just getting started.

Our new Stories from the States roundup curates nine of the most powerful stories of progress and policy wins, featuring the work of MVP partners in:

  1. Presidential Swing States, which hold the key to a Blue Wave in 2024.
  2. Senate Swing States, which could yield a powerful progressive majority.
  3. Blue Trifecta States, which show us what’s possible when we organize, win big, and build the power to pass bold policies.

  • In 2022, MVP partners helped flip the Governor’s race by just 17,117 votes — a 0.66% margin of victory. Suddenly, Arizona went from a red trifecta to a state run by a progressive Democrat who could block the GOP agenda.

  • In just the first eight months of 2023, the new Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs has vetoed a record-shattering 140+ GOP-sponsored bills that would have weakened gun safety, attacked the LGBTQ+ community, fueled voter suppression, and more.

  • Heading into 2024, our local partners are planning a coordinated campaign to win Arizona’s eleven electoral votes; elect progressive Democrat, Ruben Gallego, to the U.S. Senate; flip two U.S. House seats; and gain a state trifecta by flipping just two seats in the State Senate and House.

Ohio: We Won! A Victory for Democracy & Abortion Rights

  • On August 8, MVP partners led the charge to defeat Issue 1, a ballot measure that would have made it harder to change the state’s constitution — including in November 2023, when Ohioans will vote on codifying abortion rights.

  • Our partners now head into an abortion rights measure this November with momentum on their side. Efforts are also now under way to gather signatures for a 2024 ballot measure to establish an independent redistricting commission, which will be crucial in undoing Ohio’s extreme gerrymandering.

  • Instead of working in silos, MVP partners built a collaborative, powerhouse operation greater than the sum of its parts — which builds power moving forward into 2024, when we need to defend Sherrod Brown’s highly-vulnerable U.S. Senate seat.

Michigan: Fair Maps, Progressive Breakthroughs

  • In 2022, MVP partners helped win the first Democratic trifecta in 40 years by just 2,770 votes across a 2-seat margin in both the Michigan House and Senate.

  • So far in 2023 — thanks to both newfound governing power and grassroots pressure to provide political cover — Democrats have passed new laws repealing an abortion ban and anti-union legislation, as well as instituting clean energy expansion, gun protection, LGBTQ+ rights, and more.

  • All of this took years of organizing, culminating in a series of hard-won democracy and voting reforms that led to dramatically increased voter participation and fairer representation.

THE BIG PICTURE

How Do We Build a Durable Progressive Majority?

To close, let’s take a step back and look at the much bigger picture.

Here is the strategic proposition at the heart of MVP’s approach:

  1. To get to a just, sustainable society, we need transformative policy change.

  2. To win this policy change, we need a durable progressive elected majority to enact and protect it, and durable public support to back it up.

  3. To gain this durable elected majority and public support, we need to build lasting progressive political power.

  4. To build lasting power, we need to organize the New American Majority (voters of color and young voters) — as well as native, LGBTQ+, immigrant, working-class, rural, and other marginalized communities — who can swing the closest elections.

  5. To organize this constituency, we need to sustainably scale up the grassroots organizations that comprise the voter engagement field.

This is a project that spans multiple election cycles, and the 2024 election is a pivotal moment in the plan.

If we play our cards right, we can create a new normal where we reliably win federal elections by multiple percentage points, enact policies that reflect our values, and rebuild our country with a more sustainable and inclusive vision.

The best thing each of us can do now?

Invest in 2023, so that we win big in 2024.

Thank you for your partnership.

We hope you have a great Labor Day weekend!
